This course ultimately explores the intersection among young adult literature, literary analysis and theories, discourses in the Humanities, and English Language Education.

Through sustained engagement with authentic texts?Anglo-American prose, reputable journalistic sources, and curated passages spanning politics, economics, society, culture, education, science, and literature?students practice strategic reading (skimming, scanning, inference, discourse organization) and build academic vocabulary and genre awareness. Selected items from recent English teacher qualification examinations are integrated to familiarize students with task types and enhance test literacy. The course also fosters intercultural awareness and a reflective understanding of cultural identity and linguistic diversity. Reading is systematically linked to speaking and writing through summarizing, paraphrasing, synthesis, and discussion tasks so that, as future English teachers, students strengthen their communication as well as their reading and writing skills.

Short peer-feedback cycles help refine the tasks, and by the end of the course students compile a set of classroom-ready vocabulary lesson ideas for school settings.

Students will engage in discussions on these topics, gaining a deep understanding of the role of English teachers in future education, and will be able to devise creative and flexible teaching strategies based on this understanding.

This course discusses the major periods and turning points in U.S. history while building the historical and cultural background knowledge relevant to the English teacher qualification exam. Readings focus on phases in which American democracy was founded, tested, and renewed?from the colonial era and the founding through the Civil War and Reconstruction, the Progressive Era, the New Deal, the Civil Rights Movement, and the post?Cold War period. Instruction combines short lectures, guided discussions, summaries/paraphrases, and brief analytical responses, with attention to discourse structure, argumentation, and academic vocabulary. Reading is integrated with listening, speaking, and writing to strengthen all four skills, and selected tasks mirror exam formats to enhance test readiness.

This course introduces meaningful and educational British and American dramas (drama), discusses major themes, and helps students understand the background of the drama. Students will be able to share their thoughts on the problems raised in the drama texts, develop their ability to analyze and interpret their works through writing and dialogues, understand the meaning of the main excerpts of selected dramas, and learn English expression and grammar/vocabulary. Group and individual discussions are conducted under the guidance of the instructor, which a particular focus on how to effectively teach English using the drama we have learned.

As an advanced course following "Global Citizen English II," this course aims to approach various current issues through Written English by reading excerpts from English magazines and newspapers, while also developing a sense of Spoken English through audiovisual media such as news and broadcasts. The course not only builds background knowledge on global issues but also promotes balanced improvement in vocabulary acquisition, listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. Additionally, it aims to enhance students' ability to critically understand news and broadcasts, and to logically present their opinions on social issues through speaking and writing, fostering their global citizenship competency.

In this course, students will learn about the acoustic and articulatory properties of English sounds and gain an understanding of the types of phonetic variations in English phonemes. Students will also understand regional, racial, and social dialectical differences in English pronunciation, as well as suprasegmental aspects such as stress and intonation patterns.

By reading and discussing classic English literary texts, students aim to develop their basic skills as intellectuals with critical thinking, imagination, empathy and self-reflection for humans, and intellectual expression as well as acquire background knowledge related to the culture in the British and America. This is a seminar course, which will be based on students reading selected English classic texts prior to each class. This course develops students' comprehensive understanding, analytical skills, and logical reasoning through reading and in-depth discussion of literary texts.

This course aims to improve students English reading comprehension ability as well as to clarify the concept of English linguistics by reading the original text on English linguistics. As a follow-up lecture on the Introduction to English Linguistics, students will review the basic concepts of English linguistics that they learned earlier. Through intensive reading training focusing on quick and accurate reading comprehension, students can develop their ability to understand the text of other major courses as well as that of English linguistics. This course will cover the major areas of English linguistics including phonetics/phonology, morphology, semantics, language acquisition, and sociolinguistics.

This course aims to enhance the digital competencies of pre-service English teachers for future education. It explores the history and theories of English education using AI and digital tools, preparing students to understand, utilize, and develop digital technologies for English teaching. In particular, it focuses on cultivating the digital competencies necessary for transitioning to digital-based education, based on the digital literacy requirements outlined in the 2022 revised curriculum. Through hands-on classes, students will design innovative digital-based teaching strategies using AI digital textbooks (AIDT) and apply these strategies to develop their own teaching skills.

This course explores the fundamental theories and methods required for assessing English language learners.?In particular, it focuses on assessment approaches emphasized in contemporary English education, such as process-oriented assessment, performance-based assessment, and AI-assisted assessment. The course aims to develop pre-service English teachers’ professional competence in evaluating learners’ English proficiency and learning processes effectively and fairly.

As a pre-practicum seminar, this course prepares students for the four-week teaching practicum in the senior year by bridging university coursework and real classroom practice. Through invited talks by in-service teachers, guided lesson observations (video/live) with post-observation sessions, lesson study cycles (Plan?Teach?Observe?Reflect?Revise), and micro-teaching, students examine classroom discourse, questioning and feedback, lesson management and assessment, classroom management, student guidance, and school culture. Aligned with the 2022 Revised English Curriculum, the course emphasizes objective?task?assessment alignment, development of concise rubrics, and principled integration of digital textbooks/AI tools. Students compile a pre-practicum portfolio (observation notes, lesson plans, reflection journals, samples of professional communication) to ensure practicum readiness.

Students will learn the origins and developmental process of English examining Old English, Middle English, early modern English, and present day English. We focus on how pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar have been changed over time, and examine the relation between linguistic features and historical facts. This course also outlines the background of modern English as an international language and the regional/social characteristics of the language. This course is a lecture based course. Each lecture is provided on the slide that summarizes the textbook. Group and individual exercises will check students’ understanding. Students will discuss how such knowledge can be used in the actual educational field.

This course is designed to introduce students to syntactic analyses of linguistic data. In doing so, it mainly focuses on English sentences and adopts the Generative Grammar, which has been the mainstream approach to syntactic works for the past 50 years or so. The topics include syntactic categories, grammatical functions, simple and complex sentence structures, X-bar syntax, different movement operations, and various constituent tests. By looking into these English syntactic phenomena from a linguistic perspective, the course aims to help students to better understand how to analyze linguistic data syntactically and to develop syntactic argumentation skills.

Grounded in the 2022 Revised English Curriculum?especially its emphasis on English communicative competence and creative thinking?this course aims to deepen pre-service teachers’ academic writing by moving beyond sentence-level accuracy to paragraph- and text-level organization, argumentation, and evidence-based development. Students practice argumentative, expository, critical, and education-oriented genres with explicit attention to purpose, audience, and context. Drawing on English source texts situated in academic and social contexts, peer-reviewed articles, and teacher-certification?style tasks, the course adopts a process approach?planning, drafting, revising, and peer/instructor feedback?to build self-monitoring and feedback skills. Through sustained practice, students strengthen critical, meaning-making writing and develop the expertise to teach and assess learners’ writing effectively.

This course focuses on a specific topic in English literature and covers various literary works spanning different eras and genres. Students will develop an understanding of the particular theme and gain experience in engaging in intensive discussions and honing their wtriting skills. Through this course, students will acquire the ability to explore and analyze new topics from their own perspectives and will be equipped to develop new literature curriculum in the future as secondary education teachers.

This course, designed for senior students majoring in English Language Education, first introduces key concepts from a generative syntax perspective, including structural relations, binding theory, X-bar theory, theta theory, movement operations, and raising/control constructions. Emphasizing the practical application of theoretical knowledge, the course incorporates problem-solving exercises, discussions, and critical reflections on the pedagogical implications of English syntax. In the latter part, the course also discusses major semantic and pragmatic concepts, including entailments, presuppositions, and Gricean implicatures. Students will be able to systematically analyze complex English constructions from syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic perspectives and articulate their grammatical properties within a descriptive framework.

The programme facilitates practical understanding of education in secondary school. It is a student-led seminar with the ample amount of context-based cases from the educational practice. This seminar challenges critical interpretation and understanding of educational practice in secondary school with the knowledge of educational theories, policies, and the educational system in South Korea.

This course explores what we can do with big data (or corpus data) in teaching and learning English from linguistic perspectives, focusing on fundamental concepts in corpus linguistics, corpus types, and the processes of querying, building, and annotating corpus data. In doing so, we mainly utilize online corpus data from the family of BYU-corpora, including COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English), BYU-BNC (British National Corpus), COHA (Corpus of Historical American English), and GloWbE (Global Web-based English).

By exposing students to English Poetry in old times, they develop a contemporary perspective on English, thereby allowing them to respond more actively to the employment examination.

This course aims to strengthen students’ overall understanding of English linguistics through two strands: (i) seminar-style discussions of core topics across the discipline and (ii) collaborative analysis and interpretation of linguistics-related questions from the English teacher qualification examination. Building on coursework from the first through fourth years, we examine how the subfields?phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and related areas?manifest in real school contexts, identify recurrent patterns and task types, and distill practice-oriented knowledge for the classroom. Through an integrative approach that links linguistic theory with school grammar, the course supports students in exploring their professional aptitudes and fosters the competencies required of future English teachers.
